Carers are very welcome to come to Wealden Sailability to assist in ensuring our clients gain the maximum experience to sailing.
General Responsibility of Wealden Sailability and our Volunteers
- We ensure our volunteers have the skills to sail one of our boats with a client.
- Depending on the weather, decide the most appropriate boat for the circumstances.
- Responsible for the safety, as far as practicable, from the moment the client walks onto the pontoon and ends when the client walks off the pontoon.
- Being aware of our safeguarding obligations, as far as possible. As far as possible, our volunteers have a current Enhanced DBS certificate which covers vulnerable children and adults.
- Our volunteers are not medically trained although we encourage them to complete a first aid course. Our volunteers cannot administer any medication.
- It’s unusual, but if a volunteer finds there is a problem of some sort on the water with the client, the Session Manager will be informed and in turn he/she will inform the carer.
General Duties of a Carer
- Prior to visiting, please inform Wealden Sailability who and how many will be attending on the day. This is to ensure we have enough volunteers and boats available.
- Suggest the type of sailing their client can participate.
- Register the client at the clubhouse. The volunteer doing the registration may ask you to wait until an appropriate boat is available.
- Ensure the client has appropriate clothes and sun tan cream. Sitting on a boat is usually far colder than on shore.
- Take the client to the area where the buoyancy aids are positioned. You may be asked to assist in putting on the buoyancy aid.
- Where appropriate, accompany a client onto a boat. This tends to happen when a client may need medication or lacks confidence.
- It is the carers/guardians responsibility to … wheelchairs up and down the slipway
